5 Pointers for Switching From Gas to Electric

Are you thinking about making the switch from gas to electric? You can do this without too much difficulty or cost, depending on the appliances you’re switching and the state of your current electrical system. A SESCOS electrician can help you make the conversion safely and easily.

Reasons to Make the Switch

There are several reasons that you might want to switch your appliances from gas to electric.

  • You might feel that electric appliances are safer.
  • You’d prefer to have everything on one utility bill.
  • Avid bakers prefer to work with electric stoves.
  • Electric appliances usually cost less to buy and install.

1. Watch the Wiring

Installing a new electric appliance is not complicated, but it will require some electrical work. Don’t attempt to do this on your own. Since gas appliances run on a lower voltage, you will need to run a larger electrical wire from the circuit breaker. You’ll have to add a new 240-volt receptacle in the room where the appliances are located.

2. Don’t Forget to Shut the Gas Off

You’ll have to turn off the gas valve where you’re installing your new electric appliance. Look for the gas shutoff valve on the gas piping. Use gas-rated protective tape or valve caps to cover the valve and prevent leaking from the gas line.

3. Can Your Breaker Panel Handle the Switch?

If you have an older home, you will need to make sure that your panel can take on the additional load of a large electric appliance. It might need upgrading.

While you’re at it, check the outlet to make sure it can adapt to the higher amperage of the new appliance. Your electrician may need to upgrade it if you live in an older home.

4. When You Shouldn’t Make the Conversion

There are certain situations where you might be better off sticking with what you have rather than making the switch.

Electric dryer. Although an electric dryer is cheaper to buy than a gas one, it may cost you more in the long run. Gas dryers usually work faster to dry clothing than electric dryers do. An electric dryer might also make your electric bill higher.

Heat. Converting from gas heat to electric is more complicated than simply hooking up a new appliance. Doing so will cost you quite a bit of money both now and in the future. If you have gas heat, it’s probably a good idea to stick with it. A licensed electrician can give you a good rundown of your options when it comes to converting or changing your heating system.

5. Don’t Get Burned

If you’re planning to switch your appliances, get expert help before you make a costly and dangerous mistake. A licensed electrician can make sure your panel, outlets, and wiring are ready for your new setup.
